The film series features cameo appearances by Mr. Miyagi, Ali Mills, Chozen Toguchi, Terry Kumiko, and Jessica Andrews. The music video for No More Kings’ song Sweep by the Leg features references to the film series and Johnny Lawrence as a caricature of himself as a karate fighter. The first episode of Cobra Kai was released on October 2, 2018. The second episode was released October 3, 2018, and a third and fourth season premiere was scheduled for October 6, 2018 and October 13, 2018 respectively. The fourth and final season will be released in January 2019 and January 20, 2019. The fifth and sixth season premieres on January 21, 2019, and January 22, 2019 respectively. It is set 34 years after the original Karatekid film, re-examining the narrative from Johnny Lawrence’s point of view, and his decision to reopen the Cobra Kai karate dojo leading to the rekindling of his old rivalry with Daniel LaRusso.

The seventh and eighth season is expected to be released on January 24, 2019 and February 1, 2020. It will be the first time the series has been rebroadcast on a major U.S. network.
