Development of the film began as early as May 2013, and it was officially announced in October 2014 as Marvel Studios’ first female led superhero film. The movie was released on February 26, 2019. It is the 21st film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the third in the “Captain Marvel” series of films.

It was released by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, which also owns the rights to the Spider-Man and the X-Men franchises, and is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2018. It will be released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2018, and in US cinemas December 20, 2018 and in Australia on December 21, 2018 respectively. It has been released in Australia and the UK on December 22, 2019 and in the US on December 23, 2020, and on December 26, 20, 20 and 21, 20. The UK release date is the same as the U.S. release date for the US release of the UK version of the movie, but with a different release date and a different cast. The US release date was the same for the UK release, but the Australian release date has been pushed back to December 27, 20th, and 21st, respectively. In the comics, Danvers is a pilot presumed to have died in 1989 while testing an experimental light-speed engine designed by Dr. Wendy Lawson, whom Vers recognizes as the woman from her nightmares. Vers is captured by Skrull commander Talos. She escapes and crash-lands in Los Angeles. Her presence attracts S. H. I. E. L. D. agents Nick Fury and Phil Coulson, whose investigation is interrupted by a Skruill attack.
