Beastie Boys were an American rap rock group from New York City, formed in 1978. The group was composed of Michael Diamond, Adam Yauch and Adam Horovitz. In 2012, they became the third rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band supported Bad Brains, the Dead Kennedys, the Misfits and Reagan Youth at venues such as CBGB, A7 and Trudy Hellers Place.

Beastie Boys have sold 20 million records in the United States, making them the biggest-selling rap group since Billboard began recording sales in 1991. In 2012, they became the third rap group to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The band supported Bad Brains, the Dead Kennedys, the Misfits and Reagan Youth at venues such as CBGB, A7, Trudy Hellers Place and Max’s Kansas City, playing at the latter venue on its closing night. They toured with Madonna in 1985 and a year later released their debut album, Licensed to Ill, the first rap record to top the Billboard 200 chart. In November 1982, Beastie boys recorded the 7\” EP Polly Wog Stew at 171A studios, an early recorded example of New York hardcore. On November 13, 1982, the group played Philip Pucci’s birthday for the purposes of his short concert film,Beastie. Pucci held the concert in Bard College’s Preston Drama Dance Department Theatre. In a 2007 interview with Charlie Rose, YauCh recalled that it was Berry who suggested the name ‘Beastie’ The band states that’Beastie’ is an acronym, standing for ‘Boys Entering Anarchistic States Towards Inner Excellence’ The acronym, in fact, was an ‘afterthought’ conceived after the band name was already chosen.

The song Cooky Puss was the first piece of work that showed their incorporation of the use of samples and quickly became a hit in New York dance clubs and underground dance clubs. The track was later sampled for a commercial, earning them over 40,000 royalties in the wake of the success of the song. In 1983, the band also recorded and then performed and then its first hip hop track, ‘Cooky Ice Puss’, based on a prank call by the Ice Ice Cream Car franchise in 1983. It was a part of the new lineup’s first EP, called ‘Polly Wog stew’ The group also performed Carvel Carvel Puss in 1983, which was also the first part of a Cream franchise in the U.S., earning them more than $40,000 in royalties. In the same year, Y Kauch died of cancer and Beastie Boy disbanded. In 2004, the new line-up recorded the EP ‘The Hot Sauce Committee Part Two’, which was later certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) The group has since released seven platinum-selling albums from 1986 to 2004, including Hello Nasty, To the 5 Boroughs, The Mix-Up, and Ill Communication. They have been inducted in the R&R Hall of fame three times, most recently in 2012, when they were inducted for their work in the rap category.
