His career highlights include an undefeated 2010–11 season in the Primeira Liga with Porto, winning four trophies and becoming the youngest manager ever to win a European title. He also helped Tottenham to their then-record tally of 72 points in the Premier League during the 2012–13 season. He has also won three trophies during his spell with Zenit, achieving the fifth league title in the club’s history. In June 2011, he tendered his resignation as Porto manager and was confirmed as Chelsea’s new manager on a three-year contract with immediate effect. His first trophy as a manager was the Portuguese Supercup, which he won two months after taking over from José Mourinho. He won the UEFA Europa League in 2012, making him the youngest ever manager to win the competition and the third-youngest ever coach ever to do so. He was sacked by Chelsea on 22 June 2011 after the club paid a world-record €15million compensation via indirect compensation for the silverware won during the 2011-12 season. His contract with Chelsea was due to expire at the end of the 2012-13 season, but he was allowed to leave on a free transfer. He previously worked as an assistant coach at Porto and Académica de Coimbra before joining Marseille in June 2013. He had a short stint as technical director of the British Virgin Islands national team at the age of 21, before he moved on to a career as a coach.

Villas Boas is the great-grandson of Dom José Gerardo Coelho Vieira Pinto do Vale Peixoto de Vilas- Boas, 1st Viscount of Guilhomil. His grandmother was from Stockport, England, and he has spoken fluent English since childhood, as his grandmother was a Stockport resident. He received his C licence at 17, and his B licence at 18, and later acquired UEFA Pro Licence under the tutelage of Jim Fleeting. He played for Porto between 2007 and 2009. He left Porto in June 2010 to become the new manager of French side Marseille, where he is currently in charge of the French Premier League club. He signed a deal to become Porto’s manager on 2 June 2010. In the 2009–10 season, he led Porto to an undefeated season, only the second time this had ever been achieved, and winning the title by more than 20 points, having conceded only 13 goals all season. At the time of his appointment, AcadéMica were at the bottom of the league and still without any wins, but their luck started to change as he introduced a new style, leading them to a safe 11th place, ten points clear of the relegation zone. In addition to that, he also reached the 2009-10 Portuguese League Cup semi-finals, losing against Porto at the Estádio do Dragão to a late goal from Mariano González. He went on to follow up this success by winning both the Portuguese Cup and the European Europa League.
