It was released in select European countries on September 2, 2020, before being released simultaneously in theaters and video-on-demand in the United States on October 23, 2020. Like its predecessor, the film was panned by critics, but was a box office success. Two sequels are in development, and a third is in the planning stages.

The film was released on the same day as the second installment of the Hunger Games series, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2. The movie was released to mixed reviews, with some critics saying it was too much like the first film and others saying it didn’t do enough to explain what happened to the main characters. It has been released on Blu-ray and DVD in the UK and the U.S. on September 21, 2019, and on September 22, 2019 in Australia. It will be released in the US on September 26, 2019 and September 27, 2020 in Australia and September 28, 2019. The UK release date is September 29, 2019; the US release date will be September 30, 2020; and the UK release dates are September 30 and September 31, 20, 20.
