Adil Rami is a French professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Boavista. He began his football career playing for amateur club Étoile Fréjus Saint-Raphaël. In 2006, Rami ascended three divisions after signing with Ligue 1 club Lille. He was part of the Lille team which won the league and cup double in 2007 and 2008. In January 2011, he joined Spanish club Valencia on a four-year contract. He is a member of the France squad that won the 2018 FIFA World Cup. He chose to play for his home country of France rather than Morocco. He has been called up to the France senior squad for the first time in August 2010. He made his professional debut on 19 May 2007 against Auxerre. He signed his first professional contract with Lille on 4 June 2010. In November 2010, he was promoted to the senior squad on permanent basis and assigned the number 23 shirt. In the opening match of the season against Lorient, he suffered an injury to ligaments in one of his knees. He missed three-and-a-half months due to the injury, but returned to play in every match for Lille until the end of the 2007–08 season. He then signed a three-year deal lasting until 2010 until he was then promoted to a longer-term deal until the start of the 2011–12 season. In July 2012, he moved to Rennes on a free transfer. He played in the Champions League for Rennes in the 2014-15 season. His last game for the club was a 1-1 draw with Marseille in the Europa League group stage.

He also made his debut for the French national team in a friendly match against Norway in August 2011. He was in the preliminary list to play at the 2010 World Cup finals but did not make the final squad. His mother worked as a member-of-the-council at the city of FréJus, where he grew up. He often did odd-jobs such as taking care of the maintenance and cleanliness of the city. He only played the sport as a hobby and worked for city hall to support himself. He spent three seasons at the club playing in the Championnat de France amateur, the fourth division of French football. He initially played as an offensive player often in the midfield, but following a teammate, whom Rami described as his best friend, his coaches inserted him into defence. He appeared in 24 matches in the 2004–05 season, and then 30 in the 2005–06 season. Midway through the campaign, he took the opportunity to leave the amateur club and was signed to an amateur contract with Fré jus receiving €10,000. He later played in 27 matches as the team finished in third position, the highest finish amongst professional clubs’ reserve team’s playing in their group. In May 2007, he appeared in four matches in his first season. The following week, he signed his professional contract after agreeing to a three year deal.
