Duke is the most successful team in either conference in Challenge competition by a large margin, holding a 19–3 record.

Penn State and Purdue are the only Big Ten teams with winning records in the Challenge, while two others have 0. 500 records. The popularity of both this series and a previous ACC interconference basketball series, ACC–Big East Challenge of the 1980s, has led other conferences to form similar partnerships in which their members go head-to-head.
