Mitchell’s vocal range began to shift from mezzo-soprano to more of a wide-ranging contralto around 1975. In 2002, she was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 44th Annual Grammy Awards. Mitchell is the sole producer credited on most of her albums, including all her work in the 1970s. A blunt critic of the music industry, she quit touring and released her 17th, and reportedly last, album of original songs in 2007. She describes herself as a \”painter derailed by circumstance\”. Mitchell was born Roberta Joan Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Canada, the daughter of Myrtle Marguerite and William Andrew Anderson. Her mother’s ancestors were Scottish and Irish; her father was from a Norwegian family that possibly had some Sámi ancestry. She later moved with her parents to various bases in western Canada. At age 9, Mitchell was hospitalised for two weeks in an epidemic and considered a singing or dancing career for the first time.

At 12, she dropped out of school and hung out with a rowdy group of students. At 15, she moved to the city of Saskatoon, which she considers her hometown. At 16, she married her long-term boyfriend, and they have two children. She is a married mother-of-two. She lives in Los Angeles, California. She currently lives in a suburb of Los Angeles. She was married to her long time boyfriend, John Cusack, until he died in 2010. She had a daughter, Emma, in 2011. She also has a son, James, who she married in 2012. She and her husband have a daughter-in-law, Emily, who lives in New York City. Mitchell has three children, two step-children, and a step-son, who live in Toronto, Ontario, and one step-grandchild lives in Vancouver, Canada. Mitchell and her family live in Saskatoon and she has a daughter who lives with her husband in Toronto. Mitchell also has three step-daughters, who also live in the city and have a son and a daughter with a boyfriend. Mitchell had a son in 2012, and has a stepdaughter with whom she has two children, Emma. In 2013, Mitchell released her first album, Song to a Seagull, which includes a dedication to a former teacher, Arthur Kratzmann, who did not manage to make an impact on her. In 2014, she released her second album, Songs for Sharon, which features a number of songs written by her daughter, Sharon.
