The story was adapted for the 1991 EllipseNelvana animated series, the 1992-3 BBC Radio 5 dramatisation of the Adventures, the 1996 video game of the same name, and the 2005-6 Young Vic musical. It has been the subject of a museum exhibition and has been praised by the Dalai Lama, who awarded it the Light of Truth Award. It is generally considered to be hergé’s finest work, and is also his only adventure not to pit Tint in against an antagonist. The book was a commercial success and was published in book form by Casterman shortly after its conclusion; the series itself became a defining part of the Franco-Belgian comics tradition. The novel has been translated into 32 languages and is available in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese. The film version of the book was released in the UK in 2009 and the US in 2010. The movie version has been released in North America and Australia in 2011 and 2012. The UK version was released on DVD in 2012 and the U.S. version in 2013. The US version was also released in 2013 and the UK release was in 2014 and the Australian version in 2015.

The French version is available on Blu-ray and DVD. The Canadian version is also available on DVD and Blu-Ray, but the US release was not released until the UK version came out in 2015 and the Canadian release was delayed until 2016. The British version is released in 2017 and the American release is scheduled for 2018 and the European release in 2018. The Belgian version is expected to be released in 2019 and the French release in 2023 and 2028. The American version is due to be published in 2028 and the British release is expected in 2029. The European version is scheduled to arrive in 2031 and 2032. The U.K. release is due in 2034 and the Japanese release is in 2035 and 2036. The Australian version is set in 2038 and 2037. The German version is published in 21st and 22nd September and 21st respectively. The English version comes out in 2039 and 20th October, with the final issue being released in 20th November, 20th December, and 2031 being the 30th anniversary of the publication of the first issue of the novel. The first issue was published on September 27, 1958. The second issue was released September 28, 1958, and was the 27th and 28th November. The third issue was the 28th and 29th September, 1959. The fourth and 30th issues were released on September 30, 1958 and October 1, 1959, and October 2, 1958 respectively.
