The series premiered on April 15, 2014, on FX, and follows an anthology format, with each season set in a different era and location, with a different story and mostly new characters and cast. The first season, set in Minnesota and North Dakota in 2006 and starring Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman, Colin Hanks, and Martin Freeman, received wide acclaim from critics. The second season,set in Minnesota, North Dakota, and South Dakota in 1979 and starring Kirsten Dunst, Patrick Wilson, Jesse Plemons, Jean Smart, and Ted Danson, received widespread critical acclaim. The third season,Set in Minnesota in 2010 and starring Ewan McGregor, Carrie Coon, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Goran Bogdan, and David Thewlis, premiered in April 2017. It received three Golden Globe nominations, and received Emmy nominations including Outstanding Miniseries, and acting nominations for McGregor and Coon.

The fourth season, Set in Kansas City, Missouri in 1950 and starring Chris Rock, Jessie Buckley, Jason Schwartzman, Ben Whishaw, and Jack Huston, premiered on September 27, 2020 and received generally positive reviews. While not yet renewed for a fifth season, Hawley indicated in November 2020 that he had an idea in mind and said that it could be set somewhere in the recent past. Each season is heavily influenced by various CoenBrothers films, with numerous references to them. In 1997, a pilot was filmed for an episode of the show, but it was never picked up by a network. The pilot was intended to be a television series, but instead was turned into a reality show called The O’Brien’s Tribute to The Coen Brothers, which went on to become a box-office success. In the pilot, a young woman discovers her parents are in debt to the Cannon Limited, which gets entangled in the criminal activities of her neighbor, Ora Mayflower. Meanwhile, her teenaged neighbor, Pearl Smutny, becomes embroiled in a criminal activity of her own, which she gets caught up in as well as the activities of a nurse named Ora Mayflower on the regular occasions and in the pilot.
