Takumi Minamino was born in Izumisano, Osaka Prefecture. He joined Cerezo Osaka’s youth team at age 12 and progressed through the academy. In 2012 he was named J. League Division 1 Rookie of the Year. In 2014 he moved to Austrian club Red Bull Salzburg with whom he spent four successful seasons. In January 2020 he joined Liverpool, winning the Premier League in his inaugural season. In 2015 he made his senior international debut for Japan.

In January 2020 he joined Liverpool, winning the Premier League in his inaugural season. In 2015 he made his senior international debut for Japan. He starred in the team that reached the final of the 2019 AFC Asian Cup. He is a member of the Japan national team and plays as an attacking midfielder or winger for Liverpool. He has also played for the Japan Under-21 side and the Japan U-23 side. He was named Japan’s best player of the year for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He also won the Golden Boot in the 2014 Asian Cup for the best goal-scorer in the tournament, scoring eight times. He made his professional debut for Cerezo in November 2012. In July 2013, he became the youngest goal scorer for the club, becoming the youngest ever in the J League Division One. Six days after the club’s elimination, he scored in the second leg of the second round, which he later drew two weeks later as the club drew 3–2 with Urawa Red Diamonds. In May 2014 he was given the number thirteen shirt ahead of the new season. He became the first player from Cerezo’s youth system to play in the opening game against Albirex Niigata, which Cerezo won 1–0. Shortly after, his contract changed to professional A, having met the requirement to play enough matches to play as a professional A player. In September 2014, he signed a two-year deal with Premier League club Liverpool. In November 2014 he signed his first professional contract with Liverpool, having played enough games to meet the requirement for professional A. In February 2015, he joined the club on a one-year loan deal. In June 2015 he signed an extension with Liverpool until the end of the 2018-19 season, with a view to a permanent deal. He moved to Liverpool on a free transfer in the summer of 2019. In October 2015 he was awarded a three-year contract with the club. In December 2015 he joined Premier League side Newcastle United on a four-year-deal. He played in the final game of the 2014-15 season as a substitute for Newcastle United. In the January 2015 season he scored twice in a 1-1 draw against Kawasaki Frontale in the fourth round of the EPL.
