Real Sociedad de Fútbol is a Spanish football club based in San Sebastián, Basque Country. The club was founded on 7 September 1909 and was a founder member of La Liga in 1929. It is the most successful club in La Liga, having won the league three times in a row from 1967 to 2007. It was the first Spanish club to win the European Cup in 1982, before losing 3–2 on aggregate to eventual champions Hamburger SV in the quarter-finals.

It won the Liga title in 1980–81 and 1981–82, and last finished runner-up in 2002–03. It has also won the Copa del Rey twice, in 1909 and 1987. The team has generally fluctuated between the Primera and Segunda divisions, in one period managing to be relegated and promoted seven times. Aside football, the club also has several sections in athletics, including women’s football, track and field, field hockey and basque pelota. Its youth section has been very successful in developing internationally renowned players, such as World Cup winners Xabi Alonso and Antoine Griezmann. It contests the Basque derby against rivals Athletic Bilbao. Real Sociedd has competed in the UEFA Champions League twice, losing to Lyon in the round of 16 in the 2003–04 season and to CSKA Sofia in the semi-finals of the 1982–83 European Cup. On March 11, 1987, Real SocIEDad set a record for a most goals scored in a Supercopa de España by defeating Real Madrid 4–1 on aggregate in the first leg of the second leg.

The longest spell in the top flight was for 40 seasons, from 1967 to 2007, with the club winning the league in each of the last three seasons. The current manager is Pedro Uralde de Sategui, who was the club’s top scorer in the following season as Pedro Ural de Satégui was the top scorer the following year as Jess Marcelino was the manager of the club. The Spanish national team is known for signing only Basque players, before signing Republic of Ireland forward John Aldridge in 1989. It also has a strong Basque contingent among its players, but nowadays both non-Basque Spaniards and foreign players are represented at the Club.
