She made her stage debut in the 2005 play Prometheus Bound. Atwell rose to prominence for her portrayal of Peggy Carter in the superhero film Captain America: The First Avenger. She has also starred in the action-adventure series Agent Carter and the Marvel Cinematic Universe films Captain America and Avengers: Endgame. She began hosting the podcast series True Spies in 2020, which gives an insight into the world of espionage, asking listeners what they would do in real life spy situations. She is married to American actor Eddie Redmayne, and has a daughter and son with American actress Michelle Dockery. Her mother is British, and her father is of Native American and Irish descent from Kansas City, Missouri. She was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the miniseries The Pillars of the Earth, which earned her a nomination for Best Actress – Miniseries or Television Film.

In 2013, she starred in BBC Two’s adaptation of William Boyd’s espionage novel, Back Right, before starring in Restless, an episode of Charlie Brooker’s Black Mirror. In 2008, she appeared in Woody Allen’s film Cassandra’s Dream, playing stage actress Angela Stark.
