The 50th anniversary of the television special was marked in 2014 and a series of postage stamps featuring Rudolph were issued by the U.S. Postal Service on November 6, 2014. It has been telecast every year since 1964, making it the longest continuously running Christmas TV special. The special was based on the Johnny Marks song \”Rud Rudolph the Red, Nosed Re-indeer\” which was itself based on a poem of the same name written in 1939 by Marks’ brother-in-law, Robert L. May. It was sponsored by General Electric under the umbrella title of The General Electric Fantasy Hour and aired on NBC from December 6 to December 14, 1964. It is currently distributed by Universal Television and is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and Blu-Ray Disc in the US and Canada. The show is available in English, Spanish, German, French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese, with an English version available in the UK and Australia as well as an English and German version in Europe.

The story follows the adventures of Rudolph, Hermey, Yukon Cornelius, and Clarice, a doe and a lion named King Moonracer on the Island of Misfit Toys. They escape the Abominable Snow Monster of the North and land on the island.
