Nelson is a major liberal activist and the co-chair of the advisory board of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Nelson was born in Texas on April 29, 1933, the son of Myrle Marie Doyle and Ira Doyle Nelson. His birth was incorrectly recorded by Dr. F. Sims as April 30, and he was named by his cousin Mildred, who chose his middle name in honor of her recently deceased younger brother, who served as a major in the U.S. Revolutionary War. He is married to his long-time girlfriend, singer/songwriter/actress Tanya Mott, with whom he has three children. Nelson also has a son and a daughter, both of whom he also performs with. He has a daughter and a son-in-law, who are both singers and have appeared in several films. He also has two step-daughters, who he has also appeared in films with, such as The Electric Horseman and Stardust.
