The year is 866, and the Great Heathen Army’s arrival in Britain is about to redefine the relationship between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. The story covers about 40–45 years by the end of season 4. The fictional protagonist is Uhtred of Bebbanburg, an earl of that name who ruled during the reign of Æthelred II, though about a century after the setting of The Last Kingdom. He spent much of his time defending the northern border from the Scots. In 1016 after Cnut came to power, Cnut had Earl UHTred killed, along with 40 other Saxon nobles, probably on Christmas Day. The protagonist is re-baptised as Uht Red after his elder brother Uht red is killed by the Danes; his father and otherSaxon noblemen of Northumbria are killed in battle against theDanes.

He is forced to choose between the kingdom of his ancestors and the people who have raised him, and his loyalties are constantly tested. He tries to ensure that his fiercely-held vision of Wessex as part of a stable English nation will survive him as his legacy. These episodes cover the happenings of the novels The Lords of the North and Sword Song, although they are condensed for the screen. The third series is based on The Burning Land and Death of Kings, but with considerable plot changes. The series was completed in Hungary and filming was completed by Stephen Butchard, written by Stephen butchard and filmed in Hungary. One reviewer indicated that this had a positive effect on production values, most notably the epic end-of-episode clash in which every sword and every shield hit firmly in the swing of every episode. The second series covers the happenedings of Cornwell’s novels The Pale Horseman and The Burningland and The burning land and death of kings, but they are based on a different novel, The Burning land and the death of Kings.
