Richard Shannon Hoon was an American singer-songwriter and musician. He was the lead singer of the band Blind Melon from 1990 until his death in 1995. Hoon reportedly began using his middle name, Shannon, to avoid confusion with his father, who was also named Richard.

His musical influences included the Grateful Dead, The Beatles, John Lennon, and Bob Dylan. He and his girlfriend Lisa Crouse had a daughter named Nico Blue in July 1995. On October 20, 1995, Hoon launched himself into an all-night drug binge. The next day, he was pronounced dead at the scene. His death was attributed to a cocaine overdose.

BlindMelon released their final album, Nico, on November 12, 1996, featuring his final song, ‘So I want to write my words on the face of today and they’ll paint it on the wall of today’ Hoon’s grave is inscribed with a line from a song he wrote: ‘I know I know we can’t all stay here all the time, but we can all stay together, and that’s the way I want it to be’ He was buried at Dayton Cemetery in Dayton, Indiana with his half-sister, Anna, and half-brother, Tim. He is survived by his wife, Lisa, and their daughter, Nico Blue.
