They have sold over 20 million records and have been nominated for 13 Grammy Awards, winning for the songs \”Wish\” in 1992 and \”Happiness in Slavery\” in 1996. In 2020, they released two further installments in the Ghosts series, Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts. The logo was designed by Gary Tiborman and Gary Talpas, inspired by the typography on Talking Heads’ Talking Heads album Remain in Light. The English letters NIN are also noted to be similar to the modern Hebrew characters of the Tetragrammaton, which is the name of the modern modern Hebrew language. The first Nine Inching Nails performance took place at the Phantasy Theater in Lakewood, Ohio, on October 21, 1988, as part of the Pretty Hate Machine Tour Series.

The name NIN is a literal reference to Jesus’ crucifixion with nine-inch spikes, or Freddy Krueger’s 57-inch fingernails, on his album The Talking Heads Remain in Remain in It”. It was first appeared on the music video for their debut single, “Down’s Down,” which was released in 1987. In 2008, NIN released their second album, The Fragile, which was followed by the EPs Not the Actual Events and Add Violence. In 2010, they released their third album, With Teeth, followed by their fourth album, Ghosts I–IV, before a second hiatus. In 2012, the band released their eighth album, Hesitation Marks. The ninth album, Bad Witch, was released the following year. In 2013, the group released their ninth album Bad Witch: The Black Album. In 2014, they announced a tour of the U.S. and Europe. The tour dates for the tour are scheduled to begin on October 25, 2015, and October 26, 2015 and October 27, 2015. In 2016, they will play a gig in New York City, New Jersey, and New York, New York and Los Angeles, New England, New Mexico, and San Diego, California, respectively. The group will also play a concert in San Francisco, California on October 28, 2016, and a concert on October 29, 2016.
