Niandra LaDes and Usually Just a T-Shirt is the debut solo album by John Frusciante. It was released on November 22, 1994, on American Recordings. The first half of the album was recorded before he left the Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992. The second half was recorded while the band was on tour in the months leading up to his departure. The album sold poorly upon its release in 1994, and it was re-released in 1999. It combines avant-garde and stream-of-consciousness styles, with guitar, piano and various effects on a four-track recorder. The track “Big Takeover” was intentionally slowed down and melodically slowed down because of a past in which the songs were sung in different tempos. All of the music on the record was written by FrusCIante, save for the cover of punk band Bad Brains’ song, “My Neck From Success”, which was sung by the band’s vocalist, Anthony Kiedis, on the track “Blood Sugar Sex Magik” The album was released in the U.S. and Europe in 1994; it was released worldwide in 1995, and in 1999, it was remastered and re-issued by U.K. record label, Island Records. It is the only solo album to have been released by a member of the band Red Hot Chilli Peppers, and the only one to be released by an ex-member of the group, although the band has considered releasing a second album in the future.

The music was written in his spare time during the Blood Sugar SexMagik recording sessions, and was recorded in an empty mansion that the band decided to live in for the duration of recording. The production process became hampered by his increasingly severe addiction to heroin. The band’s rise to popularity took Fruciante by surprise, and he could not cope with it. He abruptly quit during the Japanese leg of their world tour in 1992, and his relationship with the band had become progressively more strained. He felt contemporary artists were not writing material he deemed worth listening to and the mainstream population were settling for mediocrity. Drugs were another significant topic on the album, which he based on every single note played to cope with worsening depression that was caused by worsening depression. He wrote the album in order to create interesting music which he felt no longer existed. He had been doing so since the age of nine, but never considered releasing his material to the public.
