A prequel to the game, Halo3: ODST, was released worldwide in September 2009. A sequel, Halo 4, released in November 2012, was developed by new studio 343 Industries.

A sequel, Halo 4, released in November 2012, was developed by new studio 343 Industries. It was re-released as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection for theXbox One in November 2014 and for Windows in July 2020. A prequel to the game, Halo3: ODST, was released worldwide in September 2009. It is the third installment in the Halo franchise, the game concludes the story arc begun in 2001’s Halo:  Combat Evolved and continued in 2004’s Halo 2. The first player plays as Master Chief and the second plays as the Arbiter, the second as the Covenant Elites, N’taham and Uszeam. No matter which character is played, each player has their own backstories with their own abilities, which is each identical to the previous character in the series. The story can be played cooperatively with up to three other players via Xbox Live or Link, which has its own story mode, and can be customized to suit the player’s own needs and preferences.

The balance of weapons and objects in the game was adjusted to better adhere to the “Golden Triangle of Halo”: these are weapons, grenades, and melee attacks, which are available to a player in most situations. Almost all weapons, vehicles, and interactive objects can be placed and moved on maps with Forge. Players can enter Forge games and edit and manipulate objects in real time. A budget limits the number of objects that can be place. Only one piece of equipment can be carried at a time. In addition to weapons, the game contains a new class of gear called equipment; these items have various effects, ranging from defensive screens to shield regeneration and flares. The vehicular component has been expanded with new drivable and AI-only vehicles. Unlike previous installments, theplayer’s secondary weapon is visible on their player model, holstered or slung across their back. The two-handed weapons, which slow the player but offer greatly increased firepower in return, are known as support weapons. More than one million people played Halo 3 on Xbox Live in the first twenty hours. The game was also the best-selling video game of 2007 in the U.S. Overall, thegame was very well received by critics, with the Forge and multiplayer offerings singled out as strong features, but some reviewers criticized single-player aspects, especially the plot and campaign layout.
