About Evelyn Mase in brief

Summary Evelyn MaseEvelyn Ntoko Mase was a nurse in Johannesburg, South Africa. She was the first wife of anti-apartheid activist and future president Nelson Mandela. They had four children, three of whom survived into adulthood. In 1998 she married a businessman, Simon Rakeepile, and died in 2004. Her funeral attracted international media attention and was attended by Mandela, Winnie Madikizela-Mandela, and Mandela’s third wife, Graça Machel. Mase’s relationship with Mandela became strained in the 1950s. She accused him of adultery with several women, an accusation endorsed by later biographies, and of being physically abusive, something he always denied. She generally avoided publicity, but spoke to South African reporters when Mandela was released from prison after 27 years in 1990. She died of a respiratory illness in 2004 at the age of 89. She is buried at the University of Johannesburg’s Stellenbosch Medical Centre, where she had worked as a nurse since the 1930s.
