Jacobs’ first in-ring debut occurred on August 15, 1996, where Jacobs lost to Bret Hart at a Superstars taping. After his initial run with Hart, he was part of an unsuccessful team elimination match against Hakushi Hakushi and Hakushi Hart in November 1996. He lost to Hart in a steel cage in the main event of the Survivor Series and finally participated in an elimination match in October 16, 1996. Jacobs played various characters until 1997, when he was repackaged as Kane, the younger half-brother of the Undertaker, with whom Jacobs would alternatively feud or team as The Brothers of Destruction. Jacobs earned a degree in English literature at Northeast Missouri State University, now known as Truman State University.
