Stanford Memorial Church

Stanford Memorial Church is located on the Main Quad at the center of the Stanford University campus in Stanford, California, United States. It was built during the American Renaissance by Jane Stanford as a memorial to her husband Leland. Designed by architect Charles A. Coolidge, the church has been called ‘the University’s architectural crown jewel’ The church has five pipe organs, which allow musicians to produce many styles of organ music.

Stanford Memorial Church is located on the Main Quad at the center of the Stanford University campus in Stanford, California, United States. It was built during the American Renaissance by Jane Stanford as a memorial to her husband Leland. Designed by architect Charles A. Coolidge, the church has been called ‘the University’s architectural crown jewel’ The church has five pipe organs, which allow musicians to produce many styles of organ music. It has withstood two major earthquakes, in 1906 and 1989, and was extensively renovated after each. The church’s chaplains were instrumental in the founding of Stanford’s religious studies department, moving Stanford from a secular university to a’renaissance of faith and learning’ in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Stanfords were deeply religious, and for their day and social standing, \”open-minded ecumenicalists\”, so Jane Stanford was determined that a church built on campus be a ‘nondenominational—if essentially Protestant’ house of worship. It sits in the middle of the long southern range of the school’s Main Quad, and is the principle building that is seen as the visitor approaches the University along Palm Drive from Palo Alto.
