He first reached world No. 1 in 1993, and held that position for a total of 286 weeks. He is the only man in the open era to have won the final Grand Slam tournament at which he competed. In 2007, he was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame. Sampras was born in Washington, D. C. and grew up in Palos Verdes, California. He played tennis with Rod Laver from the age of 11 until he was 16. He was spotted by Dr. Peter Fischer, a pediatrician and tennis enthusiast, who coached Sampras until 1989. Fischer was responsible for converting Sampras’s double-handed backhand to single-hand with the goal of being better prepared to win Wimbledon. His first professional singles title came at the February Ebel U. S. Pro Indoor in Philadelphia, where he defeated sixth-ranked Andre Agassi, eighth-ranked Andrés Górés, and eighteenth-ranked Tim Mayotte in the first round. He also won two Australian Opens and a joint Open era record five US Open titles in total. He retired from tennis in 2007 after winning seven Wimbledon, two Australian Open, and two US Open singles titles. He has a son, Soterios, and a daughter, Georgia, who were both born in the U.S. and are of Greek descent. The Sampras family moved to PalosVerdes in 1978, and the warmer climate there allowed the seven-year-old Sampras to play tennis throughout most of the year.

The family later moved to New York City, where Sampras played tennis until he age of 16. In 2008, Sampras moved to Los Angeles, California, to live with his wife and two children. He currently lives in Los Angeles with his daughter and son-in-law, both of whom are also professional tennis players. The couple have a son named Soterio, who is a junior pro tennis player, and has a daughter named Georgia, also a junior professional tennis star. He had a son called Petros, who was born on January 1, 2009. He and his wife have two children, Georgia and Petros Jr., who is now a junior junior tennis star, as well as a son who is in the middle of his junior pro career. In 2010, Sampra moved to California and started playing tennis at a local academy. He turned professional in 1988, and finished the year ranked No. 97 after starting the year at No. 893. In his first Grand slam singles match, he lost to No. 69 Jaime Yzaga of Peru in thefirst round of the US Open. He lost in first round of 1989 Australian Open to Christian Saceanu and, at that year’s French Open, won a Grand Slam tennis match for the first time. He did not advance past the quarterfinals in his next three tournaments, although he did record wins over No. 79 Jim Courier in their first career match-up.
