Stretford

Stretford is a historic market town in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It is on flat ground between the River Mersey and the Manchester Ship Canal. In the 19th century Stretford was an agricultural village, known locally as Porkhampton due to the large number of pigs produced for the Manchester market. The town has been the home of Manchester United Football Club since 1910, and of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864.

It was also an extensive market-gardening area, producing more than 500 long tons of vegetables each week for sale in Manchester by 1845. Notable residents have included the industrialist, philanthropist, and Manchester’s first multi-millionaire John Rylands, the suffragette Emmeline Pankhurst, the painter L. S. Lowry, Morrissey, Joy Division frontman Ian Curtis and Jay Kay of Jamiroquai. The town has been the home of Manchester United Football Club since 1910, and of Lancashire County Cricket Club since 1864. The Bridgewater Canal bisects the town, and the A56 Chester Road follows the line of the old Roman road from Deva Victrix to Mamucium, crossing the Mersey at Crossford Bridge, built at the location of the ancient ford. By 2001 less than one per cent of the town’s population was employed in agriculture. The earliest evidence of human occupation around Stret Ford comes from Neolithic stone axes found in the area, dating from about 2000 BC. The origin of the name StRetford is \”street\” on a ford across the RiverMersey. The principal road through Stretford, the A 56 Chester Road, follows the lines of theold Roman road.

The area remained largely rural until the early 20th-century development of Trafford Park in the Old Trafford district north of theTown. StretFord was part of the land occupied by the Celtic Brigantes tribe before and during the Roman occupation, and lay on their border with the Cornovii on the southern side of the Merseyside. During the 1830s between 800 and 1,000 pigs a week were being slaughtered for the market on the Manchester border on the Situated on the River Situated border. In 1836 the town became well known for its market and market production of black puddings, leading to the village being given the nickname of Porkhamptons. It also produced rhubarb and goose, made from pork stuffed with sage and onions, which was known as Stretsford goose, and was made from goose, goose and onions. It has been home to the Manchester United football club since 1910. The football club has a ground in the Trafford Park district of Old Trafford, near the town centre, where the club’s ground is also known as Old Trafford Park. The Trafford Park industrial estate is home to Manchester United’s training ground and a number of other sports facilities, including the Manchester City Football Club, Manchester City FC, Manchester United Cricket Club and Manchester City Cricket Club. The Manchester Ship canal opened in 1894 and the town is located on the banks of the Bridgewater Canal.
