What is the PlayStation Network (PSN)?

The PlayStation Network (PSN) is a digital media entertainment service provided by Sony Interactive Entertainment that has transformed how gamers connect and play across multiple devices. Launched in November 2006 for PlayStation consoles, it has since expanded to smartphones, tablets, Blu-ray players, and high-definition televisions. However, PSN faced several security issues and outages, including a major breach in April 2011 that affected 77 million registered accounts. Recent Developments

The PlayStation Network is now available in more than 73 territories worldwide, offering a range of digital media services and features that cater to various needs and preferences. In April 2024, Sony announced PSN features on PlayStation Studios-published games for Microsoft Windows starting with Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut.

Account Types and Features

Signing up to PSN is free, with two types of accounts: Master and Sub accounts. An Online ID is displayed when playing online games and using other network features. An Online ID can be changed for a fee starting in 2019. Profiles include real name disclosure, personal description, profile picture, and spoken languages.

Trophies are awarded for hitting specific targets or reaching certain milestones, with four types of trophies: bronze, silver, gold, and platinum. Platinum trophies require unlocking all other trophies. The PlayStation Network requires consoles to maintain accurate time and date settings before starting games to prevent cheating. Sony later resolved the same issue for the PlayStation 5 in November, allowing all physical and digital PS4 and PS5 games to run without any need for an accurate date and time reading from PSN, except for PlayStation Plus games.

PlayStation Plus

PlayStation Plus is a paid tiered subscription service that provides users with access to premium features. These features include access to online multiplayer, exclusive discounts on the PlayStation Store, the ability to upload up to 100 GB of saved game files to PlayStation servers, and three games available to download each month.

The ‘Extra’ tier provides access to a wide catalogue of 400+ PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games. The ‘Premium’ (also known as ‘Deluxe’) tier adds access to downloadable PlayStation, PlayStation 2, and PlayStation Portable games, access to limited trials of select games, and cloud streaming in some regions.

Membership includes access to a rotating selection of games, with the selection varying based on PlayStation Store region. New titles are announced every month, to be downloaded immediately or added to a library for later access, before being replaced by a new selection of games.

The Future of PSN

In September 2020, Sony announced that PlayStation Plus members who purchase a PlayStation 5 would also get access to a collection of ‘games that defined the generation’ games from the PlayStation 4. The collection was removed in May 2023.

On December 3, 2021, Bloomberg reported that Sony was working on a new subscription service codenamed ‘Spartacus’ that would be a merger of the company’s current services, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now, with the company reportedly set to keep the Plus branding. The service was officially confirmed by Sony in March 2022 as launching in June 2022.

The PlayStation Store

The PlayStation Store is a digital media shop offering downloadable content for purchase or free. It accepts various payment methods and offers features like cross-buy initiatives and original programming. The PlayStation Blog provides regular updates on games, developer interviews, and store news.

PlayStation Network Cards are electronic money used with the store. In 2012, Sony introduced cross-buy, allowing players to transfer between devices without extra cost. The blog was launched in June 2007 and features game announcements, developer interviews, and store updates. The PlayStation Blog Share allows users to submit ideas and vote on others.

Original programming began in 2015 with the series Powers, followed by the Emerging Filmmakers Program in 2017. A change to terms and conditions announced in 2011 required users to waive their right to sue Sony over security breaches. A clause was introduced in 2011, removing trial by jury for disputes. The terms of service are governed by California law, with any disputes litigated in San Mateo County courts.
