The Early Days

Back in 1938, on June 2nd, the first air squadron was formed in Azerbaijan. Fast forward to 1992, when AZAL was established after Azerbaijan gained independence from the Soviet Union. The airline inherited a fleet of Soviet-made aircraft from Aeroflot and began operating routes to destinations like Istanbul, Dubai, Tehran, Tel Aviv, Saint Petersburg, London, and China.

Challenges and Triumphs

In 2002, the airline ordered new Western-made helicopters and Antonov An-140 turboprops to replenish its fleet. However, in July 2004, two of its airliners were impounded by Turkey over a debt owed to a Turkish company. This was a setback, but AZAL continued to evolve.

Strategic Partnerships

AZAL signed agreements with Boeing in 2010 to substitute two Next-Generation 737s for other aircraft. The airline also cancelled an order for the remaining two Next-Generation 737s, showing a strategic approach to its fleet management.

Recent Developments

In December 2014, Azerbaijan Airlines took delivery of two Boeing 787 Dreamliners and launched its Premium economy product. In November 2017, Boeing agreed to sell five 787-8 aircraft to the airline valued at $1.9 billion. These developments signify a significant step forward for AZAL in terms of technology and passenger experience.
