The BYU Cougars men’s basketball team represents Brigham Young University in NCAA Division I play, established in 1902. BYU fielded its first basketball team in 1903, with notable players including River Jeffcoat, Mel Hutchins, Roland Minson, and Loren C. Dunn. The team made their NCAA tournament debut in 1950 under coach Stan Watts, winning two NIT championships in 1951 and 1966. Can you imagine the thrill of watching these early players compete? They laid the foundation for what would become a legendary program.

A Rich History

The team has a rich history of international players, including Timo Lampen and Krešimir Ćosić, who was the first international player to be named an All-American. The Cougars have appeared in the NCAA tournament 30 times without making it to the Final Four, tied for second most with several other teams. This statistic speaks volumes about their consistency and resilience over the years.

Kevin Young currently coaches the team after Watts retired as the winningest coach in BYU history. After Watts’ retirement, the program experienced five consecutive losing seasons before returning to the NCAA tournament in 1979 behind Danny Ainge and Frank Arnold. The Cougars reached the Elite Eight in 1981 but were replaced by LaDell Andersen, who had several successful seasons before resigning.

Roger Reid then guided the team to 20-win seasons for six years but was fired after a poor start. Steve Cleveland took over and led the Cougars back to prominence, winning championships and making NCAA tournament appearances. Dave Rose coached the team from 2005-2019, guiding them to several successful seasons and an NCAA tournament victory in 2010.

Challenges and Triumphs

However, the program has struggled since Collinsworth’s departure, including sanctions due to a benefits scandal involving Nick Emery. The BYU athletics department has appealed the decision and believes the penalty is ‘extremely harsh’ and not consistent with recent NCAA precedent. This situation highlights the challenges faced by college programs and the importance of fair treatment.

Despite these setbacks, Dave Rose retired as head coach after thirteen seasons on March 26, 2019. On April 10, 2019, Mark Pope was hired as head coach of BYU men’s basketball after Tom Holmoe announced his departure. Pope led a turnaround for the program in his first two seasons. In 2020-21, the team finished 20-6 and made the NCAA tournament as a No. 6 seed.

After Pope left to become head coach at Kentucky on April 12, 2024, Kevin Young was announced as the new head coach. This transition marks a new chapter for the program, filled with hope and anticipation for what lies ahead.
