Banksy is commonly believed to be Robin Gunningham, born on 28 July 1973 in Yate, 12 miles from Bristol. In 2014, he was awarded Person of the Year at the 2014 Webby Awards. In October 2014, an internet hoax circulated that Banksy had been arrested and his identity revealed. In June 2017, DJ Goldie referred to Banksy as \”Rob\”. There has been alternative speculation that Banksi is: Brad Pitt, David Walliams, David Beckham, Tom Hanks and Nicolas Cage among those who have claimed to be Banksy. In July 2011, Banksy was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature for the film Exit Through the Gift Shop, which made its debut at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. In January 2011, his first Los Angeles exhibition debuted at the Silver Lake Gallery, a tiny venue owned by Frank Sosa and was on view until 18 August. The exhibition, entitled Existencilism, Lies and Deviousness, was curated by Chris Vargas, Lathas Vargas and L.A. artist Lenny Kravitz. The opening night of the show was on July 19, 2002, at the 33​1 Gallery in Los Angeles, with Banksy’s work on display for the first time in the United States.

The show ran until August 18, and Banksy says that he was inspired by 3D, a graffiti artist and founding member of the musical group Massive Attack. In a 2003 interview with Simon Hattenstone of The Guardian, Banksi was described as ‘white, 28, scruffy casual—jeans, T-shirt, a silver tooth, silver chain and silver earring. He looks like a cross between Jimmy Nail and Mike Skinner of the Streets’ Banksy began as an artist at the age of 14, was expelled from school, and served time in prison for petty crime. The message is usually anti-war, anti-capitalist, or anti-establishment. Subjects often include rats, apes, policemen, children, and the elderly, and in July 2011 one of Banksi’s early works, Gorilla Mask, was painted on the exterior of a former social club in Eastville, Eastville. For 10 years in the late 1990s,. Banksy lived in Easton, Bristol, then moved to London around 2000. He claims he changed to stencilling while hiding from the police under a rubbish lorry, when he noticed the stencilled serial number and by employing this technique, he soon became more widely noticed for his art around Bristol and London. He no longer sells photographs or reproductions of his street graffiti, but his public \”installations\” are regularly resold, often even by removing the wall they were painted on.
