The film is based on an original story treatment by George Worthing Yates, which was then developed into a screenplay by Ted Sherdeman and adaptation by Russell Hughes. A nest of gigantic irradiated ants is discovered in the New Mexico desert; they quickly become a national threat when it is discovered that two young queen ants and their consorts have escaped to establish new nests. The national search that follows finally culminates in a battle with Them in the concrete spillways and storm drain system of Los Angeles. It is one of the first of the 1950s \”nuclear monster\” films, and the first \”big bug\” feature. It was directed by Gordon Douglas, and starring James Whitmore, Edmund Gwenn, Joan Weldon, and James Arness. The film was released on November 14, 1954. It has been released on Blu-ray, DVD, and Blu-Ray 2.0 on December 14, 2014. The DVD release date has been pushed back from the original release date of November 25, 2014, to December 11, 2014 to meet the 50th anniversary of the release of the film.
The Blu- ray release date was December 15, 2013, but the DVD release has been delayed until December 16, 2014 so that it can be released on the same day as theBlu-ray release of “Jurassic Park” (also known as “The Big Bug” and “The Mummy”). The movie is released on DVD on December 11th, 2015, and will be released in the UK on December 17, 2015. The UK release date is December 17th, 2013. The U.S. release date for “Them!” is December 18th, 2016, and it will be on December 19th, 2017, at the same time as “Journey to the Center of the Earth” (see below for more information about the film). The film has been rated PG-13 for sci-fi, and PG-14 for mature themes, including the use of giant ants and the threat of nuclear weapons. The movie was released in theaters on November 11, 1954, and is available on DVD in the US on December 20th, 2007, and October 19, 2008. It will also be available in Europe on December 21, 2008, and in Australia on December 22, 2009, and Canada on December 23, 2009.
