Aniplex has licensed the film in North America and will release it in Australia and New Zealand in 2021. It was the best three-day opening weekend ever in Japanese theaters, with ¥4.4 billion (US$1.2 billion) on its opening weekend, and grossed ¥4 billion over the weekend of September 18-20, 2020. It has been described as the most successful anime film of the year so far, with a box office gross of over $1 billion.

The movie is based on the shōnen manga series Demon Slayer by Koyoharu Gotōge. The cast and cast reprising their roles from the television series, with the staff and cast returning for the anime film as well as a special edition of a special manga featuring character Kyōjurō Rengoku, limited to 4.5 million copies. The anime film was directed by Haruo Sotozaki and produced by Ufotable, and is distributed in Japan by aniplex and Toho. The soundtrack was composed by LiSA, who also performed the film’s theme song, titled “Homura’s’. The film has been released in Japan and North America in cooperation with Funxx.
