She began her acting career in 1978 and had her first leading role in the musical film Grease 2. Her breakthrough role was as gangster moll Elvira Hancock in the crime film Scarface. Her roles in Dangerous Liaisons and The Fabulous Baker Boys garnered her two consecutive Academy Award nominations, for Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress, respectively. She went on to star as Catwoman Selina Kyle in Tim Burton’s superhero film Batman Returns, following which she won the Silver Bear for Best Actress. She received her first Emmy Award nomination for portraying Ruth Madoff in the HBO television film The Wizard of Lies. She debuted to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the original Wasp in Ant-Man and the Wasp. She has also appeared in several television series, including Delta House, CHiPs, Enos and B. A. D. Cats. In 2002, she returned with the musical Hairspray. She subsequently played supporting roles in Falling in Love Again with Susannah York and Charlie Chan and the Curse of the Dragon Queen, none of which met with much critical or box office success. She also starred in the comedy The Hollywood Knights with Tony Danza, appearing as high school sweethearts. Her last film role was in the ensemble film Murder on the Orient Express, in which she played a troubled housewife in Love Field.

She is the owner of Via Rosa Productions, a production company based in Los Angeles, California, which has produced a series of films including The Children Nobody Wanted and Splendor in the Grass. She was married to actor Robert De Niro until his death in 2009. She had a daughter with actor Robert Downey, Jr. in 2010. She and her daughter have a son, Jake, who was born in 2011. She currently lives in California with her husband and two daughters. She lives with her mother and two sisters in Santa Ana, California. Her father is an air-conditioning contractor and her mother is a housewife. Her paternal grandfather was of German ancestry and her paternal grandmother was of English, Welsh, French, Irish, and Dutch descent, while her maternal grandfather is of Swiss-German descent and her maternal grandmother of Swedish ancestry. Her parents were both originally from North Dakota, and she has one elder brother, Rick, and two younger sisters, Dedee Pfeiffser, a television and film actress, and Lori PFeiffer. She has two older brothers, Rick and Rick Pfeffer, and a younger sister, Lori P Feiffer, who is also an actress. Her brother Rick is also a TV and film actor. Her mother, Donna Jean, is a former New York City mayor and a former Los Angeles City Council member. Her sister Lori is a businesswoman and former mayor of Los Angeles.
