Western Australia is Australia’s largest state, with a total land area of 2,527,013 square kilometres. It is the second-largest country subdivision in the world, surpassed only by Russia’s Sakha Republic. Its economy mainly relies on mining, oil and gas, services and construction. It has about 2.6 million inhabitants, around 11 percent of the national total, of whom the vast majority live in the south-west corner.

The first Europeans to visit Western Australia belonged to the Dutch Dirk Hartog expedition, who visited the Western Australian coast in 1616. Western Australia achieved responsible government in 1890 and federated with the other British colonies in Australia in 1901. Today, its economy mainly relies on mining, oil and gas, services and construction. The state produces 46 per cent of Australia’s exports and is the world’s largest iron ore producer. It has about 2.6 million inhabitants, around 11 percent of the national total, of whom the vast majority live in the south-west corner of the state. In 1887, a new constitution was drafted providing the state with the right to provide a constitution for the new state, providing the new constitution for Western Australia was drafted for the state in 1887. The current state parliament was formed in 2011. It was the first state parliament to be directly elected by the people of Western Australia, and the first to be elected by a majority of the population. It will hold its first general election on November 18, 2015. The next state election will be held on November 26, 2016.
