The current lineup features Corgan, Chamberlin, Iha and guitarist Jeff Schroeder. The group released their first single, The Potential One, in 1990. They signed to Caroline Records in 1991. After releasing the single Gish, they became a minor success with the single Rhinoceros, receiving airplay on some modern radio stations. The album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 album chart. With 30 million albums sold worldwide, the Smashing pumpkins were one of the most commercially successful and critically acclaimed bands of the 1990s.

However, internal fighting, drug use, and diminishing record sales led to a 2000 break-up. In 2006, Corgan and Chamberlin reconvened to record a new Smashing pumping album, Zeitgeist. After touring throughout 2007 and 2008 with a lineup including new guitarist Jeff. Schroeder,. Chamberlin left the band in early 2009. Later that year Corgan began a new recording series with a rotating lineup of musicians entitled Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, which encompassed the release of stand-alone singles, compilation EP releases, and two full albums that also fell under the project’s scope—Oceania in 2012 and Monuments to an Elegy in 2014. In 2010, the band released their debut album, The Rains of Rains, which featured several live performances by the band. In 2011, they released their second full-length album, No Past, No Future, No Sun, No Sun and Cyr. In 2012, the group recorded their third album, Shaken, Not Stirred, with producer Butch Vigorous at his studio in Madison, Wisconsin for USD 20,000. In 2013, they recorded their fourth and final album, Rains Of Raining, which was recorded at Gish Vigigish Studios in Madison. In 2014, they toured the U.S. for the first time with a new lineup, which included a new drummer, Jimmy Chamberlin. In 2015, they played a show at the Avalon Nightclub in New York City.
