The draft was originally scheduled for June 26–27, 2020 at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec, but was postponed on March 25, 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Ice hockey players born between January 1, 2000, and September 15, 2002 were eligible for selection. The first three picks overall in this draft were awarded by lottery.

The New York Rangers won phase two of the draft lottery and moved up nine spots in the draft order to earn the first selection. Alexis Lafreniere, Quinton Byfield and Tim Stuetzle were the first three selections. The Los Angeles Kings moved up two spots and the Ottawa Senators remained at third overall.
